Definition of Computer 

A computer is an electronic machine that accepts data (input), processes it, produces results (output),

and stores information for future use. It performs all these functions very quickly and accurately.


Basic Operations of a Computer:

A computer performs four major operations known as IPO-S:

1. Input – Accepting data through input devices like keyboard, mouse, scanner, etc.

2. Process – The CPU processes the data according to instructions (programs).

3. Output – Displaying or giving results through output devices like monitor, printer, speaker, etc.

4. Storage – Saving data and information in storage devices like hard drive, SSD, or USB.

 

Features of a Computer:

Some of the main characteristics that make a computer powerful are:

1. Speed – Computers can perform millions of tasks in a second.

2. Accuracy – Computers are highly accurate and make very few mistakes.

3. Versatile – A computer can be used for every types of works

4. Electronic – It runs using electricity and electronic circuits.

5. Diligence – A computer can work for long hours without getting tired or bored.

 

Application Areas of Computer:

Computers are used in almost every field. Some common areas are:

1. Education – For online classes, digital learning, and research.

2. Health – To manage patient records, scan reports, and assist in surgeries.

3. Banking – ATM services, online banking, and financial transactions.

4. Business – Billing systems, email communication, and record keeping.

5. Entertainment – Watching movies, listening to music, playing games.

6. Government – Used for ID cards, data storage, and policy planning.


Advantages and Disadvantages of a computer

Advantages

  1. High Speed – Computers can do tasks very fast.
  2. Accuracy – They give correct results with very few mistakes.
  3. Multitasking – Can do many things at the same time.
  4. Storage – Can store a lot of information safely.
  5. Connectivity – Helps us connect with people worldwide (internet, email, etc.).

Disadvantages

  1. No Thinking – Computers cannot think or make decisions on their own.
  2. Health Problems – Long use can harm eyes and posture.
  3. Cybercrime – Can be misused for hacking and stealing data.
  4. Unemployment – Some jobs are replaced by computers.
  5. Addiction – People may spend too much time on games or social media.
